How Loving God Influences Every Part of Our Lives

The Shema, a Hebrew prayer still used today, teaches that loving God influences every part of our lives. Obedience is an expression of our love for God.

Have you ever heard of the Shema? (pronounced sheh-mah) I knew it was a daily Hebrew prayer, but that’s about it. Recently, I read a devotional that discussed it briefly. The Shema is taken from 3 passages: Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 11:13-21; and Numbers 15:37-41. Reading these spurred me on to learn more! The Shema teaches us that loving God influences every part of our lives.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:4–9)

The first word in this passage is “hear.” It is translated from the Hebrew word shema and means not only to hear, but the action followed by hearing. Moses told the children of Israel to listen up! Then he gave them what Jesus referred to as the greatest commandment: to love God with their entire being (Matthew 22:36-37). Additionally, they were to love His commandments (or His Words), keeping them in their hearts and minds.

As a result, they would talk about them all the time. What we love spills onto those around us, especially within our families. God’s Word would be the first thing on their minds when they awoke and the last thing they thought about before they went to bed. They would talk about it all day. When they were sitting down and when they were working outside. Instructing their children would be a natural by-product of their own love for God.

Loving God and obeying His commandments were to define their lives.

Loving and obeying God and His Word results in blessing!Click to Tweet

Who Influences Your Heart?

This reminded me of Psalm 1, which contrasts the person who does not follow God with the one who delights in God.

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers. (Psalm 1:1-3)

When read in light of the Shema, Psalm 1 takes on fresh meaning. The Shema tells us that loving God influences every part of our lives.. But so does who we allow to influence us.

  • “Walk in step with” means to seek counsel from
  • “Stand in the way of” means to stand in the life-path with
  • “Sit in the company of” means to dwell in the house of

Each of these scenarios is opposite the commands that God, through Moses, gave Israel.

This doesn’t mean we don’t associate with unbelievers. Just the opposite! How will they know the gospel unless we tell them? How will they listen if we don’t express genuine love?

But we guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23). When I was growing up, my mom said, “You will have all kinds of friends, Dianne. But your ‘spending the night’ friends are your best friends. They should love the Lord and encourage you to grow in your relationship with Him.”

That’s the key. The level of intimacy we share with our friends determines the influence they have on our lives, and ultimately our hearts. Psalm 1 warns us away from developing intimate relationships with those who don’t revere God’s Word.

The Shema in the New Testament

We find elements of the Shema throughout Scripture. I think that must be what James was thinking of when he wrote James 1:22-25.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. (James 1:22–25)

Verse 22 tells us not to just listen to the Word—but to do what it says.

Verse 25 tells us that those who look meditate on God’s Word ( at the perfect law (or those who meditate on, as in Psalm 1), experience freedom! Not only that, they have God’s blessing.

Today, devout Jewish worshipers pray through these passages several times a day. New Testament Christians aren’t required to do so. But the heart of the Shema should be at the heart of our worship. Loving God influences every part of our lives. Which results in serving Him whole-heartedly, obeying Him fully, and experiencing God’s blessing.

More about growing your love relationship with God

I was challenged to consider the idiom, friends with benefits, in regard to our relationship with God. What I discovered might surprise you!
What captures your attention--and holds it? Social media borders on obsession, so forget that. What is beautiful, or delightful? What keeps you captivated?
Do you know the difference between daily devotions and Bible study? We need both! If we want to know God well, Bible study is essential!

AS HIS FAITHFUL SERVANT, GOD HAS **SET YOU APART** ➡️ FOR HIMSELF!!

Wow. That's powerful.

Do you have something very special that you keep in a special place -- just for you? (I'm not talking about hiding those special cookies. 😉😂)

I love coffee mugs. But certain mugs are different than the others. One was a gift from a special friend. One looks a lot like one my grandfather let me drink from when I visited my grandparents. One is from Disney, and I don't let ANYONE use that one!

Yes, these are "just things." But they are special to me, and anytime I pull one of these mugs out of the cabinet, I remember why it's special. Why it's different from the mugs that match my dishes.

In the Old Testament, “set apart” means to be ...

=> distinctly different.<=

You are God’s faithful servant. He made you distinctly different from everyone else—for His purposes. God’s purposes for you are distinctly different from anyone else’s.

In the New Testament when we read the words “set apart,” they have the added meaning of being sanctified, or holy.

God created you => to be holy for holy purposes. <=

One such purpose is to be a messenger of the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15)--showing others how they can be reconciled to God. What a privilege we have to be His messengers!

My prayer for you is the same as that of Paul's at the close of his letter to the Ephesian church:

Whenever you speak [or write], may God give you words so you will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel and that you may declare it fearlessly, as you should. (Ephesians 6:19-20)

Be blessed today as you proclaim the gospel of peace to a world that is crying out for it!!

PSALM 15 IS SHORT, YET JAM-PACKED WITH GOODNESS.
Tough goodness, but goodness all the same. I had to include all of it in my images. Scroll through the pages so you don't miss any of it.

When I journaled through this Psalm, I was knee-deep in the edits for my Bible study, STANDING FIRM IN CHRIST: Biblical Principles for Fighting Spiritual Battles. Edits from my awesome editor and edits from my sweet friends who wanted this Bible study to be its best.

Let me tell you, allowing trusted friends inside your writing world is scary! It's a good thing, but it can also sting. As I read through the psalmist's words, God brought a principle to my mind. You know the one--what's in our hearts shows up in our words (and even our thoughts!!).

Psalm 15, explains that the *blameless person* enjoys a close relationship with God, and describes this person in detail.

This person SPEAKS TRUTH FROM THE HEART. In other words, it's not just the words this person speaks, but the response to difficult words! I wrote the following in my journal:

"A blameless person's speech is wholesome. She doesn't just not curse--she encourages. AND she accepts criticism without being critical."

Wow. That can be hard to do. Receiving edits can be a challenge. But what about when someone who cares about you confronts you (in love) about a difficult life issue?

How we respond to criticism is a test of what's really in our hearts.

When our hearts are tender and match up with God's truth, our lives are built on a firm foundation that will never be shaken.

✨ What other truths can we remember to keep our hearts tender instead of tough and critical?

OUR THOUGHTS OF GOD ARE NOT GREAT ENOUGH. -- J. I. Packer

The Scripture focus for Chapter 3 of ENJOYING INTIMACY WITH GOD, is Isaiah 40, which holds many favorite passages, including:

"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:31, NIV)

Isaiah 40 is lengthy, but oh, so beautiful. It was written to encourage Israel after her discipline (captivity in Babylon) was completed. God wanted them to know that He was fully worthy of their trust.

It is an interesting contrast. It describes man’s utter weakness—and God’s transcendence. But this God who is so other than anything we know, LOVES **US**. The God who made the universe, who holds the oceans in His hands, who never grows weary—is our friend.

Sanders shares the first verse from “How Great Thou Art.” It is fitting.

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

In what ways, as you move forward to serve our King, do you need to fully depend on God?

I've been on somewhat of a social media hiatus--working tirelessly with my husband on some much needed household repairs/updates. Finding my way and rhythm back into this special world is a bit overwhelming!

Let's remember, God goes before us and strengthens us for all He calls us to do.

Yesterday marked 30 years of loving this man!

According to tradition, the 30th anniversary is the Pearl Anniversary. I don’t know exactly why, but I surmise it’s because of how a pearl is formed inside an oyster.

A grain of sand, or some other irritant, finds its way inside. The oyster produces a substance that coats the irritant, eventually forming a pearl.

Irritants are plentiful in marriage. Tim & I have certainly had more than a few. Some of our own making, some we didn’t ask for. But God has been gracious and merciful to us. He has taught us how to love each other through them. He has taught us how to forgive when the irritant is something one of us did to cause the other pain. We are still learning.

You could say love and forgiveness have formed in our marriage a string of pearls.

There is no one else I’d rather walk this life with. Tim is God’s precious gift to me.

I love you, Sweetheart.

💞 What have you found that makes a difference in your marriage? That keeps you connected to your spouse? 💞
