Do you ever wonder what the difference is between praise, thanksgiving, and worship? For a seasoned believer, it may seem like an easy question to answer—until someone asks you! We had this experience recently in our small group. I had an answer to give, but part of me wondered if I really had it right. So I embarked on my own study and learned so much, which always happens when we dive into God’s Word. The result, of course, is a blog post. 😊
As I neared completion, I decided to create a couple of treats. Some free journaling pages and bookmarks, and a new 5-Day Mini Bible Study, which is now in my Etsy shop. Links are included in the post.
I bet when you read this you’ll discover some new things! Check the link in my bio to read the latest blog post!

I asked a similar question about a month ago. As fasting is not something to be done with a sense of pride, I appreciate discretion. Feel free to DM me.
QUESTION #4 REGARDING PRAYER: Do you incorporate fasting into your prayer life? If so, how often and what does that look like for you? Do you use your meal time specifically for prayer?
MY ANSWER: Fasting has not been my practice. I did do this, though, for the first time not too long ago. I want to make this a regular part of my praying routine. It was on my goals list for 2022. I read some about fasting, but I did not incorporate it.
Occasionally I have been so busy I did not eat until dinner. But this was not intentional, and prayer was not in the forefront of my mind. I was focused on projects. My current understanding is that “true, spiritual fasting,” includes time set aside for prayer and Bible reading, which may or may not coincide with meal time.
🙏🙏🙏
If you missed my earlier post, I am considering leading a Bible study in the fall on prayer. In preparation, I’m asking myself some serious questions and thought it would be good to get some outside input. I’m including my own answers as well.

QUESTION #3 REGARDING PRAYER: What does prayer look like for you?
MY ANSWER: It varies. Tim and I pray together every evening before dinner. We pray for our kids every night. We also pray for our small group, our extended families, and friends. We don’t pray for everyone every night. But whatever God lays on our hearts to pray for.
Lately, my personal prayer time is in the morning and it’s very brief. This is where I need to improve. I pray “arrow prayers” throughout the day and a brief “thank you” when I go to bed. But my “contemplative” prayer time is lacking.

QUESTION #2 REGARDING PRAYER: What is missing from your prayer time that would make it all you want it to be? (I am NOT referring to praying in tongues.)
MY ANSWER: I want to slow down and not feel in a hurry. I don’t want to lose focus, which happens a lot these days. I want to feel that I prayed effectively. And I don’t want to feel guilty because I didn’t pray for everyone on my prayer list. (Note the word “feel”!!)
I do understand that some have “the gift of intercession,” and as such delight in spending large chunks of time in prayer. I recognize this is not my spiritual gift, but it is also not an excuse for not making prayer a priority.

Hey, Friends! I am thinking about prayer, a lot!! Probably because I’m praying a lot more than I have in a while. Aren’t our spiritual lives like that? 😉 Ups and downs. Intense seasons and then some that are lacking. Since prayer is on my heart right now, I am considering leading a Bible study on the subject this fall. In preparation, I’m asking myself some serious questions. I figured I would ask you, as well. ☺️
I will ask (right now) six questions over the course of several days. I *want* to read your answers. Some questions you may not feel comfortable answering publicly. I totally understand. Please feel free to DM me.
Since I’m asking you to bare your soul, I feel I must do the same. 💕 My answer will follow my question.
Here we go!
QUESTION #1 REGARDING PRAYER: What are your obstacles to prayer? In other words, what keeps you from praying? (Either praying at all, or praying ad much as you’d like to.)
MY ANSWER: Soooo many things. Allllll the things. I’d like to say, “time.” But really, it’s because prayer is not the priority of my morning alone time. Lately, I’m very distracted with my phone. I do use my phone for some quiet time material and other resources, but I have not been disciplined in “starting first with God.” Sometimes, by the time I’m finished reading my Bible, my brain is ready to move on to other things. Yes, I need self-discipline in this area! And YES! God has already given me the ability to do that. I just haven’t. ‘nuf said. 😂

This week in our small group study, I felt the Lord’s gentle chastisement.
We looked at the promise in Luke 11:28, “He [Jesus] replied, ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.’”
At first glance, the promise of blessing comes from obedience. But it’s much more.
In the preceding verses, Jesus had cast out a demon that caused a man to be mute. The crowd accused Him of casting out a demon with Satan’s power.
Jesus explained how ridiculous it would be for Satan to drive out his own demons. Then a woman cries out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you,” (v 27).
This is the sticking point. Jesus was in the middle of an important discourse when this woman interrupts Him. He corrects her with this:
✨ Blessed are those who HEAR the word of God and obey it.
That word HEAR means to LISTEN with FULL ATTENTION.
✨ We cannot truly obey God if we don’t know what He’s saying to us.
Basically, Jesus told this woman, and the others in the crowd, “Pay attention!! Don’t get distracted from my voice. I have important things to tell you. You won’t know what they are and what I want you to do, if all you’re thinking about is what you want to say or how you can gain attention. Put your attention on ME.”
It’s never fun to be Jesus’s object lesson.
The questions I’m asking myself …
✨ What keeps me from spending time alone with Jesus?
✨ When I finally get alone with Him, what distracts me?
✨ What keeps me from focusing on God’s Word?
✨ What causes my kind to wander when I’m praying?
➡️ Eliminating distractions …
➡️ Exercising discipline …
… to bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)
… brings true blessing.

I’m reading through Proverbs again, a habit my dad taught me when I was young. One Proverb a day each month. I’ve read through this book so many times, yet the Holy Spirit illumines new truth with each read.
“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young.” (Proverbs 1:1–4, NIV)
➡️ Prudence in Hebrew means to “act with insight.”
➡️ Additionally, in Proverbs 1:4, we learn that the simple person can gain prudence.
➡️ Anyone who wants to, can become wise.
➡️ But we must seek it.
❓Have you ever read through Proverbs on a regular basis? 🙋♀️
❓Won’t you join me in reading a Proverb a day and gaining biblical wisdom? 🙋♀️

It’s been about a week since we “fell back” to Standard Time. Many mourn the loss of daylight hours and post their frustration on social media. But I’m thinking about Christmas and how we celebrate light. In some ways, this frustration is a celebration. It reveals our deep need for light and how we suffer without it.
It impacts all of us.
I don’t think it’s an accident that we have this quiet desperation over encroaching darkness exactly when we do. Every day for the next 5 weeks, we will continue to lose bits of daylight. Around December 20-22, comes the Winter Solstice, the day with the least amount of sunlight. A few days later, in this darkness, we celebrate the Light of the World!
