“Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.” (Micah 7:18–19, NIV)
I read these verses last week, and they arrested my attention.
Although it speaks specifically to the nation of Israel when Jesus Christ will reign on earth for a thousand years, it is true of our relationship with God today.
✨ WHO IS A GOD LIKE OURS? ✨
The verse begins by asking…
❓Who is a God like ours?
Then the writer answers …
♥️ Our God pardons our sin and forgives our transgressions. (The Hebrew meaning for “pardon” means to take away our guilt.)
This phrase immediately brings to mind what John the Baptizer said about Jesus.
“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)
Our God takes away our sin, and He *forgives* us. The way the writer says it … it’s like, who *even* forgives? Like it’s a difficult thing.
As fallen humans, we know how difficult forgiveness can be. Especially when offenses cut deeply.
Well, our sin cut deeply.
♥️ Yet God forgives us.
When we give our lives to Christ, He completely pardons and completely forgives us. He doesn’t hang on to even one bit of resentment.
Instead, we experience His great love.
Yes, sometimes He disciplines us, as He did with disobedient Israel. But the end of the verse tells the full story.
Our God does not stay angry forever.
♥️ HE DELIGHTS TO SHOW MERCY. ♥️
Because of Jesus’s death on the Cross, we can experience the delight of God’s mercy TODAY.
Oh, dear one …
If you have not experienced the cleansing forgiveness of God’s mercy and grace, I would love to walk you through this.
If you are struggling in your walk with the Lord and need someone to pray with you, I would love to encourage you.

Good Morning, Friends! I hope y’all are staying WARM! It is COLD here in Pearland! I woke up to 27 degrees and snow falling!
I have a new article for you today, and it’s a rich one. Lately I’ve been including “journaling prompts” throughout my posts, and sometimes a “mini Bible study” to go along with them. This one is much the same. The “extra” isn’t a full, 5-day mini Bible study, but it is substantial and will allow you to digest the material at your own pace. Plus, it is completely free. You don’t even have to be a subscriber for access. 🙂
A couple of weeks ago I was driving over a bridge that really stresses me out. It’s tall and the lanes are narrow. But because of traffic, it was the way I needed to go to get to my parents’ house. When driving on that bridge, I *always* play some worship music for the two minutes that are the most harrowing. I selected an album from a new song I had listened to earlier. There was one song with lyrics that had me puzzled. Later, I spent considerable time looking them up and contemplating them. That song was the impulse for this post. Here we go!!
~~~~
How do we live a life of holiness amid our current culture? Do we even know what holiness is? What about the idea of being “set apart”? How does that fit in? Can we be holy without being considered out of touch?
This topic is a rich one, and there is no way I can tackle all of it. But there are some elements I’d like for us to consider. And in the process, challenge us to think about what it means, as a Christ follower, to be set apart, or to be holy. As it wouldn’t be fair to write a post like this without being transparent with you, I share a part of my personal journey toward the end.
The themes of Advent culminate in this one word – LOVE.
God the Father showed us His love by …
—sending His Son to live among us
—sacrificing Him to atone for our sin
—so that we might live through Him (1 John 4:9-10)
Love is all about LIFE! Jesus told His disciples …
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
The LIFE Jesus talked about certainly included rescue from eternal separation from God, that is ETERNAL life. But it also includes a fully satisfying life. The New American Standard Bible uses the word abundant to describe this — which means over and above, more than enough.
These verses from the Book of Psalms show us how God’s love is intrinsically connected with the other themes of Advent
“Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.” (Psalm 130:7)
“‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” (Isaiah 54:10)
“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.” (Psalm 90:14)
This Christmas, experience God’s very best for you in His gifts of HOPE, PEACE, JOY … and LOVE.
(Note … I don’t have a “love” nativity set! It’s “on my list.” 😉)
The experience of joy is one reason Jesus came! Jesus told His disciples …
📖 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
✨✨✨ I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:9–11)
According to these verses, there is no mistaking that experiencing joy is tied to our obedience. That makes sense, of course. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin. But when we refuse to repent, no matter what we tell ourselves, we do not experience joy.
Psalm 32 describes King David’s misery when he ignored God’s call to repent. He lived in misery for almost a year. I know what that’s like. My guess is some of you do, too.
David also describes the freedom that comes from confession and restoration. No longer did he live under the weight of unconfessed sin. Rather, he rejoiced in the Lord’s unfailing love.
📖 “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
While in captivity, the Israelites did not participate in the traditional feasts; nor did they hear the Word of God taught. Once they returned to Jerusalem, however, Ezra read from the scrolls. They were convicted and they reconnected with the Lord, celebrating feasts as they did before. As a result, they experienced great joy.
📖 “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)
✨✨✨ For the joy that was set before Him.
Jesus showed us that another key to experiencing joy was keeping our eyes focused on eternity. He endured the pain of the cross and rejection from His Father by focusing on eternity with us! His love allowed Him to lay down His life as payment for our sin.
For what? So we could spend forever with Him in perfect relationship. What a gift!
With our hope firmly anchored in Jesus — God’s fulfillment of His promised Messiah — we can experience peace. A peace like none other.
Isaiah prophesied that a Child would be born, and His name would be 👑 Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
As Prince, Jesus rules. He rules over our confusion, our pain, our grief, our frustration, our finances, our relationships. You name it; He rules over it. He doesn’t change our circumstances, but the Holy Spirit fills our hearts and our minds with peace, so we endure them with a calm trust.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.” (Isaiah 26:3–4)
Consider what it means to have a steadfast mind. The KJV and NKJV translate verse 3:
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)
“Stayed” is the same as “steadfast,” which means the Lord upholds, supports, and sustains us.
Why or how does this happen?
✨ Because we fully trust the Lord, we steadfastly fix our hearts and minds on Jesus.
It’s exactly what Jesus did when He endured the cross on our behalf.
“For the joy set before him he endured the cross…” (Hebrews 12:2).
That joy? Is eternity with you and me!
I don’t know what circumstances are threatening your peace, but I know the One who rules over them. He will rule over yours.
❓In what ways can you focus on Jesus so your trust in Him is firmly established?
How often do we sing songs without paying attention to the lyrics? It’s easy to do, especially with songs we’ve sung many times. When it comes to songs of faith, however, paying attention (even meditating on them) can change our entire perspective. That’s what I’ve done with the beloved Christmas carol, “O Come All Ye Faithful,” which is one of my favorites. Maybe it’s one of yours, too. Surprisingly, it was not included in my Advent devotional.
The hymn is a “modern-day” psalm with a call to worship Jesus Christ in joyful, triumphant praise!
Considering this, we will look at each element of the carol, asking the standard “5Ws and an H” questions (who, what, where, when, why, and how), although not all will not be applicable. Then we will meditate on each portion with Scriptures that support them. This meditation is one you can “sink your teeth into.” It will take a few days to complete!
Throughout this post, I’ve included opportunities for you to pause and meditate on the lyrics and their associated Scriptures. In addition, I developed some beautiful journaling pages with the same journaling prompts you’ll see here. If you’re an email subscriber, you can find these on my Resource Page. (If you’re not a subscriber yet, you can sign up on the Resource entry page.)
Can you feel it? That sense of anticipation? I’ve noticed a shift in our celebration of Christmas in recent years. Since 2020 and the COVID quarantine, people have been putting up their Christmas trees and decorating their homes much earlier than before. I remember that first year so vividly. After putting up our own tree on the Friday after Thanksgiving, I ventured out to Hobby Lobby for a few additional items. The shelves were almost bare! I was shocked!
I get it now. In a world where darkness reigns, we are looking for hope! Anything to shine a light in our hopelessness. Setting up our Christmas trees, decked out in lights and sparklies, is one way we do this.
JESUS came into our darkness with the LIGHT of His LIFE! Because of His perfect life, death, and resurrection, we can have abundant life (fully satisfying) here on earth now, and eternal life with Him in the future.
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12)
